How direct billing works here

1

You send your plan details

Insurer name, policy or group number, and your member or certificate ID. We collect these before your first appointment, not during it.

2

We confirm what your plan covers

We check whether your insurer accepts direct billing for Registered Dietitian services and tell you what we find before you commit to anything.

3

We bill your insurer after the appointment

The covered portion goes straight to your insurer. If there is a remaining balance, you are told the amount in advance.

Why the credential matters for your claim

Most extended health plans reimburse nutrition services only when they are delivered by a Registered Dietitian. It is a protected title, regulated in Alberta by the College of Dietitians of Alberta, and registration can be verified on the College's public register. "Nutritionist" is not a protected title in most of Canada, which is why plans frequently exclude those services. Michael Fouts is a Registered Dietitian and a Certified Personal Trainer.

Coverage questions

Which insurers does Leverage Nutrition direct bill?

We direct bill Alberta Blue Cross, Sun Life, Medavie Blue Cross and Green Shield Canada, plus insurers on the Telus Health eClaims network including Canada Life, Desjardins and Manulife. This list is not exhaustive, because the Telus Health eClaims network covers additional insurers. If yours is not listed, ask before your first appointment and we will check it.

What happens if my insurer does not allow direct billing?

You pay at the time of the appointment and we provide an itemised receipt with the practitioner registration number your insurer needs. You submit that receipt for reimbursement under your plan's usual process.

Do I need a doctor's referral to use my benefits for a dietitian?

You do not need a referral to book with us. Some benefit plans require a physician referral before they will reimburse, so it is worth confirming that with your insurer first.

How do I find out whether my plan covers a dietitian?

Check your benefits booklet or member portal for "Registered Dietitian". It is usually listed under paramedical services alongside massage therapy and physiotherapy. Your plan will show an annual maximum and, in some cases, a per-visit cap.

Is a nutritionist covered the same way as a dietitian?

Usually not. Most extended health plans reimburse services provided by a Registered Dietitian specifically, because it is a regulated and protected title. "Nutritionist" is not a protected title in most of Canada, so those services are frequently excluded.

What do I need to bring to my first appointment?

Your insurer name, policy or group number, and member or certificate ID. We set up direct billing before the appointment so there is no payment step at the end of the session.

Can I use benefits for virtual appointments?

Yes. Extended health plans that cover Registered Dietitian services generally cover virtual appointments on the same terms as in-person ones.
